Fieldcaps normally have stitched stars, but sometimes, towards the end of the war they would be using brass or aluminium stars which came from the disgarded army peaked caps (which were less and less in use towards the end of the war). that is why you have the two types. The early war one has a manufacturing stamp on the side (adress of the tailor). The soldier will have put on the stars as probably a fantasy or show of rank. Sometimes one finds one rank collartab stitched to hat or shirt to indicate rank. So, this I think he has done here. The cap you received as present from your friend has the factory mark and date (rectangular stamp) and the approval stamp (oval in the photo) stamped on it. This would change towards the end of the war where there was no lining even anymore, just the simple cloth cap with very little detail.
