Grenadier Military Antiques Auctions – Auction XXVII
This is an example of a French pattern of 1860 Infantry shako. Shakos such as this were imported for use by several Union regiments, including the 83rd Pennsylvania. They were sold post-Civil War by the Francis Bannerman Company. This shako is made of black leather with a stamped brass US eagle front plate and stamped steel red, white, and blue cockade. It is complete with its original leather sweatband and chin strap. The chin strap is complete, however it is broken. Also present is a red wool pom-pom. The overall condition is very good, showing some wear from age and use. Please be sure to review all photos.
